What Clients Say:

“Excellent session-gave much for food for thought!”

REASONS, NOT EXCUSES, PRODUCE RESULT
Attribution Theory and the Workplace

What Clients Say:

“The very best training I have ever had!”

“Fantastic, professional experience”

“The best training I have had in years!  It explained a lot of things and gave me insight into why some things work and some don’t.”

Purposes: Attribution Theory is concerned with our constant search for the causes of our successes and our failures. We need to understand the human need to explain why things happen in order to gain predictability and control.  If we find out why we were successful, we may be able to repeat that success.  More important, perhaps, if we determine what caused our failure, we may avoid it in the future.  We need to understand the value of a strong internal locus of control.  We want to engage in ‘coyote thinking’.

Value and Outcomes:  Supervisors and managers will be able to guide employees toward a stronger internal locus of control.  If we attribute success or failure to internal locus, we are the originators of what happens, rather than pawns controlled by outside forces.  As an originator, a person feels proactive rather than reactive to the environment. Attribution of success to internal locus (ability/effort) results in increased self-empowerment.

Description:  One of the most amazing features of human beings is this:  They can explain anything.  No matter the cause, we have a strong need to understand and explain what is going on in our world.  Because people must explain, it opens up some interesting inference possibilities.  Think about it for a minute.  If you can affect how people understand and explain what is going on, you can be a positive influence!

Components:  Participants will be able to understand the three continuums of causality:

We’ll examine the four factors our culture uses to attribute success and failure:

We’ll learn and understand the “Coyote System of Control Theory” and its importance in the workplace.

Ideally suited for:  Breakout session or half-day program.
